Bishop Paul S. Morton: “Still Standing” is a gospel concert and service held at the New Orleans Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church, his first time returning to that building since Hurricane Katrina. In addition to a wealth of music, the live DVD contains interviews with many of the locals who survived the flood.
In the introduction of “Still Standing” Kurt Carr introduces Bishop Paul S. Morton as a real survivor.
“Still Standing” is Bishop Paul S. Morton’s triumphant declaration that nothing, including the horrible attack of Hurricane Katrina can smother his praise.
Bishop Paul S. Morton made it through the storm with his flock scattered, home destroyed and the sanctuary of his church severely damaged. However, one year after Hurricane Katrina struck, at the height of hurricane season the Bishop christened the newly restored Greater St. Stephens Church with this wonderful home-coming celebration in the form of a live recording.
He tells the audience filled with many of his once scattered members, “He restores ya’ll.” Produced by Kurt Carr, the Light records project is a contemporary and traditional musical marriage of songs of worship and jubilation. Bishop Morton’s strong vibrato leads the way on three duets with family members (his brother, sister and daughter) and special guest Tramaine Hawkins.
Worshippers will perpetually rewind to the glorious “Holy Medley.” Sweet choir voices combine on the re-make of Stephen Curtis Chapman’s “Agnes Dei,” followed by the commanding “Bow Down,” melting into “Holy One” on which the lucid voice of the song’s originator Tramaine Hawkins dives in the finish off the album’s most beautiful work.
Naturally, after Tramaine Hawkins’ piercing soprano the medley swells into a praise break. Other stand out cuts include The Cross and Blood dedication to Thomas Whitfield who Bishop Paul S. Morton states produced his first project. And, the upbeat “We Made It” adds the finishing touch with its thick New Orleans accent of Jazz and Zydeco to stamp “made in the Crescent City” on the album. “Still Standing” is a gift of encouragement that signifies the storm is truly over.
