REV CREFLO DOLLAR RESISTS SENATE DEADLINE: Minister sends members of the Finance Committee letter of explanation.
Atlanta’s Rev. Creflo Dollar sent a letter to the members of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee explaining why he is ignoring their March 31 deadline to hand over his church’s financial records.
He stated that the church should be protected against public scrutiny and Congressional evaluation of the validity of their beliefs.
Rev. Creflo Dollar’s World Changers Church International in College Park is one of six mega-churches across the country that Republican Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa asked to hand over their books last November. Grassley claims he is reacting to complaints that some churches may be abusing federal non-profit tax laws through lavish spending. Earlier this month Democratic Senator Max Baucus of Montana joined the request.
Rev. Creflo Dollar initially agreed to the spirit of the request last fall, publicly disclosing that his church took in $69 million the previous year. He and his attorneys now argue that only the Internal Revenue Service can look into whether his church is complying with the federal tax laws.
In his refusal letter, also posted on his church’s web site, Rev. Creflo Dollar claims the Senators’ request violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and amounts to a violation of the separation of church and state. The Senate committee has threatened to issue subpoenas for the records of any church that doesn’t surrender them voluntarily.
One other mega-church minister is also refusing to comply, Rev. Kenneth Copeland of Texas, who has been a mentor to Rev Creflo Dollar.
