.com: What’s the best advice you received along the way?

Y’Anna: Donald Lawrence told me to give him my attitude, just who I am and everytime I sing, just do my best. He also told me to stop singing so hard ‘cause I might get vocally tired, but I have to give 110% all the time.

.com: How is your family reacting to this whole experience?

Y’Anna: They’re elated. They’re much more excited than I am. Everybody’s pretty much excited for me. Everybody knew I was going to be a singer, but not on this level and just so fast and so quick.

.com: When did you first realize your talent?

Y’Anna: I first started singing when I was 7 at church. When I really knew I had something was when I was in elementary school. My teacher pulled it out of me. I knew I had it because I used to show off a bit in elementary school.

.com: Where did your talent come from?

Y’Anna: It’s a family talent. My uncle used to sing with Sam Cooke. My aunt is well-known in the gospel industry. It’s just all in my family. It’s my father’s side of the family.

.com: Why did you choose to sing gospel, opposed to secular?

Y’Anna: Actually, to be honest, before I auditioned I had a wake-up call that week before. God told me that if I turned everything over to him, he’d open doors to me. I was singing in a secular band that sang jazz and R&B. With gospel, I feel like God had a calling on my life. I just followed it and have not turned back. The gospel is more fulfilling.
