Bishop Walter Hawkins One Of Gospel Music’s Greats: Died Yesterday Aged 61
GMB has some rather sad news, for all you gospel music lovers out there today. The news has just reached us that Grammy Award-winning gospel singer and pastor, Bishop Walter Hawkins, died at his home in Ripon on Sunday at the age of 61, after losing his battle with cancer.
According to Cindy Adams at examiner.com, his older brother Edwin Hawkins said that Walter had been battling pancreatic cancer. “Today, I lost my brother, my pastor, and my best friend…Bishop Walter Hawkins suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more and will be greatly missed,” Edwin said.
Walter Hawkins was born in Oakland, California, and obtained his divinity degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He then recorded his first album, “Do Your Best,” in 1972. Then in 1973, Walter became a pastor and founded the Love Center Church in Oakland.
He is survived by his two children, Trystan Hawkins and R&B singer Walter “Jamie” Hawkins Jr., a daughter-in-law Myiia “Sunny” Hawkins (also a gospel singer), two grandchildren, Jahve and Jamie-Daniel, and his siblings, Lynette, Daniel, Edwin, Carol and Feddie.
GMB thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time.
