Coko, the former lead singer of the platinum recording trio Sisters With Voices (SWV) is set to release her second gospel CD entitled, ‘The Winner in Me’ on Light Records.

Her signature powerhouse vocals are unmistakable. And the first release called ‘Wait On God‘ is a classic gospel tune brimming with emotion and inspiration.

Coko, whose real name is Cheryl Gamble, began her recording career as a choir member in Hezekiah Walker’s Love Fellowship Tabernacle Choir. In 1990 Coko formed the group Female Edition and later renamed it SWV. After their breakup some eight years later, Coko released one solo R&B album then signed onto a gospel label and married music producer Mike “Big Mike” Clemmons who is the father of her second son, Jalen.

Coko’s full gospel solo debut, Grateful, was released in 2006 and debuted at #5 on Billboard’s Top Independent albums chart. So her upcoming CD has great expectations.

Kelly Price, who also established a following in the R&B genre before crossing over to gospel, is a guest artist on Coko’s CD. Other guest artists include Canton Jones, Israel Haughton and Lady (Cyde) Tibba (Gamble) who is Coko’s mother. The CD is now available in Stores Everywhere.

On October 14th Coko (of SWV) will release “A COKO CHRISTMAS“. The album will rediscover some of the SWV-inked Christmas tunes “Oh Holy Night,” “This Christmas,” and “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire), while also enjoying holiday inspired songs “Holy” and “Grateful,” from her solo debut album. Special features include George Huff, who appeared with Coko on “Give Love On Christmas Day” and also a guest appearance from Coko’s mother, Lady Tibba and son Jalen on “Silent Night”.

On Monday, October 13, 2008 @7:00 p.m. TBAAL presents “Director Curtis King’s Wonderful One – 42nd Anniversary Concert Tribute to Gospel Legend Vanessa Bell Armstrong.

The concert will feature performances by Smokie Norful, Vickie Winans, Tramaine Hawkins, Bryan Wilson, Rance Allen, Coko, Margaret Bell, Kervy Brown, Lil’ Mo and Daryl Coley. It will be held at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters in Dallas, Texas.

Who’s who in black Gospel music is coming out to celebrate the life and music of legendary Gospel artist Vanessa Bell Armstrong on her 42nd anniversary as a Gospel artist. Her first radio hit was “Peace Be Still” and it took the Gospel world by storm in 1983.

What followed was more hit recordings such as the number one CD, “Chosen,” which features “Nobody But Jesus“, a Broadway production of “Don’t Get God Started” and the theme song to the `80s NBC sitcom “Amen,” that starred Clifton Davis and Sherman Helmsley.

Vanessa Bell Armstrong is also one of the few Gospel artists to enjoy a string of respectable R&B radio successes with her songs such as “You Bring Out the Best in Me,” “Something on the Inside” and “Pressing On.” Since recovering from an illness that caused her to become partially paralyzed and to briefly lose her singing ability, Armstrong is back on the scene in a big way. She’s signed to EMI Gospel and is working on a new CD with Grammy-winning producer Donald Lawrence at the helm.

Coko, who led in SWV’s top ten pop hits such as “I’m So Into You” and “Weak” during the 1990s, has received her first Grammy nomination as a solo artist. The singer’s latest CD “Grateful” (Light Records) was nominated for a Grammy as Best Contemporary R&B Gospel CD of the Year.

The debut gospel album is on the top ten lists on the Billboard gospel album sales chart and her single “I Get Joy,” featuring Kirk Franklin, hit the top 40 on both the Hot Gospel Songs and Hot R&B Airplay singles charts.

Among the many highlights on the album is Coko’s remake of the Clark Sisters‘ “Endow Me” which features Fantasia, Faith Evans and Li’l Mo. Her mother, Lady Tibba Gamble, who once recorded with Light Records as a member of the New York Community Choir, joins Coko and Donald Lawrence on the festive, “Mighty God.”

Coko, who has lent her signature voice to hit songs such as, “Men In Black,” (with Will Smith) and her solo hit, “Sunshine,” is not a newcomer to the church. Her career began at 12 years old as a member of the New York Community Choir. The singer was a member of Hezekiah Walker’s Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, and it was during that period that she teamed up with childhood friends Leanne “Lelee” Lyons and Tamara “Taj” Johnson to form SWV. In the past, she’s appeared on gospel projects by The Lord’s Church Cathedral Choir, Youthful Praise and Brent Jones & the T.P. Mobb.

The 2008 Stellar Award will take place in at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on January 12, 2008. Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans and Byron Cage will host for the night. The theme “Taking You Higher” is the driving creative force behind BET’s production of its uplifting, spirit-filled 7th Annual CELEBRATION OF GOSPEL special, gathering musical artists from both the inspirational and secular worlds for a rousing evening of praise. The two-hour telecast features musical performances, guest appearances and special salutes to some of the greatest names in gospel history.

COKO former member of SWV (Sisters With Voices) has released her first gospel album, entitled “Grateful“. COKO’s version of “Endow Me” recorded first by the Clark Sisters, is truly a blessing. COKO also has featuring on this track Fantasia Barrino, Lil Mo and Faith Evans. These ladies went back to their gospel roots and performed like true gospel artist. We pray that COKO and the ladies continue on there journey back home, where they belong.
